I really think UCF has a chance to become a powerhouse. The school itself has one of the largest undergraduate programs in the country, is in a great state for recruiting, and is coming off a very successful season. The only thing holding them back really is their conference. But with a playoff, it means that even getting that 4th spot can give you a chance at a title.
What are your thoughts?

Welcome to the site! They have a chance to be a solid team year after year, but O'Leary is no Bobby Bowden. They said the same things you are about USF and that never materialized. You are right that the American conference is not really strong and that will hold them back. Now if they were to be invited to somewhere like the Big 12, they would be in a better position to contend. The reality is that the ACC conference winner or a #2 team from the SEC, Pac 10 or even Big 10 has a better chance at that #4 seed than the winner of the AAC.

It would take a solid out of conference schedule, and they would have to survive said schedule. It's still going to be difficult being a team from outside the power conferences to get enough respect to finish in the top four, unless they've got a track record of continued success, like Boise State has now.

Yeah, I pretty much agree with this. It will be interesting to see if this whole union thing goes through, how it might completely change the landscape of college football. I sort of doubt anything will happen though
